Back to Earth was founded in 2001 by Eric Fenster and Ari Derfel. Their vision was to create a community center in the San Francisco Bay Area with three main purposes: to nourish people with delicious organic, local cuisine; to create a gathering space using the most cutting-edge, sustainable design; and to reconnect people to nature by guiding wilderness trips into the California backcountry.

In 2001, Back to Earth Outdoors launched to provide inspiring outdoor experiences for hundreds of youth and adults. In 2002, Back to Earth Organic Catering entered the scene and today caters to over 25,000 people each year, while leading the charge in "greening" the event industry. In autumn 2009, Gather will complete the 8 year vision. This organic restaurant, café, & bar will live at the heart of the LEED Platinum-certified David Brower Community Center in downtown Berkeley.
